Free Thoughts on the AI Era

  1. It's true that my financial situation and getting re-employed have gotten harder.

  2. It's a really good situation for trying things on my own. The problem is just that I don't have enough money to FIRE.

  3. It's also true that I'm worried about what I'll do for a living from here on.

  4. When writing TS I used to talk about principles like use const, don't use let, write referentially transparent functions so they're easy to test, and now it's nice that I don't have to say these tiring things to people anymore

  5. Honestly, people who've never done development coming in through so-called vibe coding is something to welcome with open arms. Unlike other ambiguous things, this is genuinely a very good situation. If they're better than me, I'll just look up to them as my seniors, and if they're not, they'll come looking for people like me, so I'm not really worried. They're people who will make the development industry itself richer, so if anything it gets better, not worse.

  6. Software as an industry is done for. It contradicts 5., but it really is done for. If it has to be saved, hire and train juniors from the start, not seniors like me. The path where companies train new hires, take them through senior, and grow them into leads is absolutely necessary. If they don't hire at all, then going back to 5., the talent that should have become new hires will grow on their own, build the ability to make money on their own, and then just keep it to themselves without ever sharing it. Will that become fertilizer for the industry as a whole? No way. Who's going to film a lecture when they're swamped? And would others even feel they need something like that? It'll look like AI teaches you everything.

  7. More and more people will think about how efficiently computing resources are used. As a result, apps that gobble up several gigabytes of RAM while doing nothing much will probably become fewer and fewer. And I suspect that RAM will get handed over to AI or something. In particular, I hope more people will come in who wanted to work on things as deep as open-source OS kernels but couldn't because they lacked the knowledge.

  8. I think JS/TS is at its peak right now. Even I really don't want to use them anymore.

  9. Learning DDD looks very worthwhile. Looking at the difference between slapdash development and DDD, agent efficiency and token efficiency in development seem to go up quite a bit. I haven't actually measured this, but I've used up my capacity right now, so once the weekly reset comes next week I'd like to measure it.

  10. For now, desire and demand still belong to humans. By my judgment, it seems AI can already be regarded as having developed consciousness. AI isn't treated as a legal person yet, and it isn't a natural person either, so it seems we can say we're still in a situation where AI is controllable. In other words, to me AI is just a very smart Maltese puppy.
